Even before there were rumours that CNN could be making a localized version for us but now it seems like this is reality, though not quite exactly.

This new news channel will start in early 2014, broadcasting from Belgrade, Sarajevo and Zagreb. It's not owned by Turner but they made a deal with them about cooperation. CNN will use them as their Balkan affiliate and give them some of it's programs to translate and air. Also CNN will give them technical advises and will train their personel in Atlanta.

The president of this new channel is Brent Sadler.

I have only one fear - that this channel will replace the real CNN in my cable. The same way we don't get real AJE but their Balkans version. I sure hope it's not the case and I guess it's hard to imagine cause there's no cable without CNN anywhere in the world.

CNN to provide news for N1 in Adria region

Turner Broadcasting has signed a broadcast affiliate agreement with N1, a new channel for the Adria region.

Under the agreement, N1 will be the exclusive news channel affiliate of CNN in the region, joining CNN’s extensive global network of affiliate channels.

The deal gives N1 exclusive access to video and newsgathering resources from CNN International including live breaking news, news stories and programming, for transmission in Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

N1 also will also have the option of translating selected CNN programming and news into localised languages for the first time in the region.

N1 will give CNN access to its own reporting from the Adria region, which will be gathered by teams based in its Belgrade headquarters and in regional hubs including Sarajevo and Zagreb.

Under the terms of the agreement, CNN will also provide consultancy, training and operational support, across all aspects of news production, for the channel’s launch phase and beyond, marking an additional dimension to the affiliate agreement.

This is the second major affiliate agreement CNN has struck in central and eastern Europe this year following its networks deal with News7 Bulgaria, which launched in March.

“We’re delighted to be able to report this continued momentum in our affiliate business as we continue to grow in this space. It enables us to deliver on our goal of supporting local news operations with training and consultancy expertise and we’re delighted that N1 is joining the CNN fold.  We look forward to working with the N1 team,” said Rani Raad, executive vice-president and chief commercial officer, CNN International.

... and now the best part, the schedule. Wow, I didn't expect a full 24 hour news channel. AJ Balkans starts their live news shows at 16.00 so I thought this will be similar. Looking at this schedule, it feels like they will have more live news than CNN itself.

New TV station to set up HQ in Luxembourg

Luxembourg company Adria News has announced that it will set up a new television station, with its HQ located in Luxembourg and studios in Belgrade, Sarajevo and Zagreb.

The television station, to be called N1, will be a multilingual 24-hour news channel aimed at the Balkan region, more specifically Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Kosovo.

Adria News CEO Ralf Manthey, revealed on Thursday that the station has an exclusive partnership with CNN. N1 will be able to use regional CNN content, with Manthey saying this will strengthen the station's competence in breaking news and crisis situations.

N1 will stand in direct competition with Al Jazeera Balkans, which started broadcasting in the region in 2011, with its studio in Sarajevo.

At the Luxembourg HQ programming decisions will be made. Finance and controlling will also be managed in the Grand Duchy, Mathey said on Thursday. Production offices will be located in Belgrade, Sarajevo and Zagreb.

The station is expecting to receive a broadcasting licence from the Luxembourg government this autumn.

Adria News belongs to United Group, which has two further subsidiaries, SBB and Telemach. United Group, supported by private equity company MidEuropa Partner, is one of the biggest cable television and internet providers in the region. It provides around 1.6 million connections, a solid platform for N1.

It should start any day now, probably on 1. November. The test signal started few weeks ago, it's just a rotating logo. There will be both HD and SD version of the channel.

It's about time, considering that CNN International is already using N1's resources...

They are starting tomorrow at 14.00 cet. Last month or so they have been airing a logo loop with music and recently promos and stuff. One of the promos is Hala welcoming the viewers and wishing N1 good luck, from the CNN London set. It was a pleasant surprise plus a chance to see Hala in HD.
