New Tokyo correspondent

http://www.cnnasiapa...en/content/972/

CNN International today announced the appointment of Will Ripley as the network's Tokyo-based correspondent.

A journalist with almost 15-years experience, Ripley will be responsible for covering major news stories from Japan.

"Will is a tenacious, dedicated, courageous reporter - exactly what we look for at CNN," Executive Vice President and Managing Director of CNN International Tony Maddox said. "We are thrilled to welcome him to the CNN family as we continue to strengthen our coverage in the Asia region."

Ripley has spent the last three years as an investigative journalist and anchor for KUSA-TV in Denver, Colorado. Prior to that appointment he spent seven years on the U.S-Mexico border as an anchor and reporter for KRGV-TV in South Texas. He reported on drug cartels, border violence and illegal immigration. Before moving to Texas, Ripley worked for KRCG-TV in Missouri.

Throughout his career, Ripley has won numerous reporting accolades including four Regional Edward R. Murrow awards and a Heartland Regional Emmy award. Ripley studied journalism at the University of Missouri in Columbia, is an accomplished cameraman and editor, and speaks fluent Spanish.

Is he replacing anyone?  There's so much movement in Asia I can't keep up.

The last permanent correspondent in Tokyo was Kyung Lah I think, but she has been based in the US for well over a year. Since she left there have been temporary fill-ins such as Alex Zolbert or Diana Magnay, or they have sent Paula Hancocks over from Seoul.

That's so random! CNN seems to like the local people here. Will Ripley is/has been a really good reporter here. He's done a lot of investigative pieces, and he's also easy on the eyes. I'm surprised that he's moving to Tokyo though.

Japan is a pretty easy gig, isn't it?  Not a whole lot of unexpected things go on there.  So it's a good place to start an international career?

Will Ripley is in war zone training. I assumed, but did not know CNN (and presumably other networks) put their correspondents through this training prior to reporting from war zones or crisis areas. I'm sure this is standard procedure, but we should keep in mind Will came from KUSA in Denver

I think there was a report on BackStory couple of years ago about what and how journos prepare to going to war zones. Maybe it is available on cnn.com website.
