Everyone who works for an organization like CNN or NPR or the BBC who gets sent to war zones gets this training.  It's at least a week long and might be as long as two weeks.  Everyone also gets a refresher course.  I'm not sure how often they get the refresher course.

One of the many problems with being independent is that they may not get this training or they may have to pay for it themselves.

I know of one organization that does not provide bullet proof vests for  the local hires that they use for translators.  A good one is quite expensive and necessary for one's safety.

Will Ripley was interviewing someone today and had on a pair of horn rimmed glasses.  I like the look.  In fact, I like him better in these glasses than in his contacts.

Does anyone know, or want to speculate as to why Will Ripley was the CNN Correspondent sent to North Korea? Will hasn't even been at the network for a year, and doesn't have much foreign reporting experience. With journalist entrance into North Korea so unprecedented, why not send Anderson Cooper, Christiane Amanpour or one of CNN's several Senior International Correspondents? Does anyone think the government of the DPRK selected Will or CNN just took a chance on a newbie?

Sure, I'll speculate.

I think it was a pretty easy assignment.  Go to NK, take their guided tour to only approved locations, talk to only approved people, watch the wrestling tournament, go home. Well beneath the time & talents of those you mentioned.  I think it's a perfect assignment for the new CNN Asia reporter.

And then, and then, NK changed its mind & gave CNN a chance to very very limited interviews with the prisoners. That was entirely unexpected.  NK may have thought it was taking advantage of the newbie.  They didn't even let him know in advance.  But I think he did a fine job.  He doesn't seem fazed by doing international reporting despite his foreign reporting experience being on the Mexican-US border.  I haven't seen him make a gaffe, unlike Amira Walker and that new one from Australia who don't seem to be ready for international anchor work yet.

I agree with Carolina, though I don't think there's anything more to that decision than what meets the eye. Christiane and Wolf have already been to North Korea at least once, and one of them even made a documentary about it, so perhaps it's time to let the new Tokyo correspondent cover a story in his own region.

The interviews with the NK prisoners was a great get for Will Ripley and I think he did a really fine job. No doubt he'll be rewarded for that.

Will Ripley is back in Japan.  He had a report on the controversial new Miss World - Japan yesterday.  Why is she controversial?  She's half Japanese and half African Ameircan.  The Japanes are up in arms because she isn't really Japanese.  Racists.

But that isn't why I'm writing.  She's almost tall in heels and Ripley looked like he was having a hell of a good time walking with her, seeing eye to eye.  One might even say he was flirting with her.  It was fun to see.  We rarely see the reporters having a good time.

He's gay, so flirting with a woman would be a rare sight indeed!

Is he gay? Is that his boyfriend then in the photo with their tops off?

Some people are just flirts -- I know a few gay men who will flirt with women and men.

Have you looked at the video I posted?  He's definitely flirting.

How sure are you of this, Charles?

What picture, Jordy?
