I invented CNN iReport

I invented CNN iReport on Cable TV, way in advance of CNN, using advanced internet computer programming of my webcam from home, across the web, to the studios of the highly rated Cable TV show: Call For Help with Leo Laporte .

This episode aired in the USA, Canada and Australia. Call For Help with Leo Laporte is a terrific educational Science Technology TV show for those CNN fans who enjoyed watching NEXT@CNN SciTech News in the past.

CNN's i-Report Marks Year of User-Generated Contributions

When CNN first invited its global audience to submit their own pictures and video of the news of the day via cell phones, cameras and other devices, the first i-Reports offered included a photograph of bomb damage in Israel, a portrait of a U.S. soldier in Iraq and an image of a squirrel coping with a heat wave in the U.S. Midwest.

One year later, CNN's i-Report has garnered more than 50,000 submissions from 189 countries and territories around the world, ranging from compelling to light-hearted to tragic to amazing. CNN's citizen journalism initiative now pulls in an average of about 7,000 i-Reports each month.

I used to think iReport was a good idea, but now I'm seriously having doubts. When iReport becomes news in itself, rather than the news including bits of iReporting, something's gone seriously wrong. The thing that's really annoyed me is this new 'best of iReport' segment on weekend World News. At least it used to have Jonathan Mann giving some sensible narration, but now it's just a random collection of iReports, most of which have nothing at all to do with news (I thought CNN was a news channel???).

News??? I don't think so (they weren't even particularly impressive flames!) And please do some decent graphics! And some better music!

There's not even any narration to say what's going on. CNN, bring back Reuters NOW!

Worst of all, it means LESS RALITSA - bad idea CNN.

I heard somewhere that CNN's bought the domains 'iReport.com' and 'i-Report.com' for $750,000, so I thought I'd check them out.

Take a look at the top stories on the homepage when I looked:
- BREAKING NEWS Ketchup: Mustard wanted for questioning (I couldn't get the video to play, so don't ask me what it's about )
- My roomate has been stealing my stuff
- Thursday Lunch Report: Omelet!
- Tornado Victim Orgy Sparks Clamidia Fears

Wow. Talk about being on the frontiers of news reporting.

There were one or two newsworthy items if you looked hard, but even those were just US election things.

What a shame that this is what CNN has come to. Please, please bring back Reuters.

Building upon the popularity of iReport in the virtual world of Second Life, CNN has relocated to its own island. This island features new in-world geographic elements and meeting spaces, including a virtual drive-in theater complete with a snack bar and vintage cars where visitors can view recent in-world iReports, pick up iReport gear to dress their avatars and check out the iReport.com/secondlife page.

CNN's mission for iReport within Second Life remains as it did upon launch in 2008: to provide Second Life residents a way to identify and share news and events happening within their virtual community through the submission of SL iReports.

The thing about ireport is that it does help the news reporting process when eyewitnesses to the news are on scene and have video or photos of a breaking news story. In the past, we'd have to wait perhaps hours for news agency pictures to filter through. By having eyewitness accounts and footage, CNN has the edge.

The problem I have with ireport is when they send people out in the streets by saying go and film this or that and you get people trying to act like reporters. They are basically doing the job of what the CNN correspondents should be doing.

Again, I do not have a problem with eyewitnesses to genuine news events, but when they post these assignments for viewers to go create reports on, that crosses the line in my opinion.

I read somewhere that Jon Klein paid $750,000 for the ireport.com website when they decided to launch CNN iReports. Does anyone know if that is true or not?

edit: I just read a post above that seems to suggest it was true. It seems like an awful lot of money CNN paid out to buy the ireport.com url.

CNN iReport turns 5 in August. They are having "meetups" around the world. Is anyone going to one near where they live?

I don't mind using CNN iReport for getting eyewitness accounts or videos of breaking news or major news events, but CNNI (and I assume CNNUS) were running clips of people giving their opinion on the US debt crisis. This is an abuse of CNN iReport in my opinion. Again, I think it is a great tool to collect eyewitness accounts and video/images of major news events, but please spare us the visual version of talkback radio.
