I remember that ALJ was deemed to be an instrument of the extremist groups by Americans when it first started. I think I remember it being slammed for showing things from Osama B.L. and others. Part of the problem may have been the editorial content in ALJ -- ALJ Eng. has a different, more western-friendly approach.

I think there are some satellite channels which show it now. NYC, for example.

that has nothing to do with it. aj aired the tapes, and all channels followed the lead. like if bbc and cnn got the tapes they wouldn't have aired them?

The more I think about it, the clearer my memory becomes. Yes, ALJ was soundly criticized b/c it aired a tape of Osama Bin Ladin -- this probably was shortly after 911. And I lived in the US at the time.

Neave Barker left? Did he leave AJE or just Moscow?

This is weird but kinda predictable after the Kuala Lumpur downsize. The DC bulletins were different in that they focused heavily on Latin America but recently the Doha half hour bulletins have been structured in that the first 15 mins are headlines and major news while the last 15 mins focus on one region of the world. But I do hope this has something to do with Kamahl Santamaria's recent tweets about "appointment to view" stuff. Maybe shows focused on one part of the world?

They are firing 75 percent of their staff in Washington. That's a shocker! I really liked those news cut-ins from Washington. I'm wondering what's going to happen with the anchors. When they shut down their newscenter in KL all the anchors - even those with minor roles - got jobs (or at least offers) in Doha. Can you imagine Anand Naidoo, Shihab Rattansi, Daljit Dhaliwal and Lisa Fletcher moving to Doha? The first three have been working in the US for many years and Lisa is American. All in all, I don't know if I like those changes. Is London to be closed next? Seems like Adrian is back in the UK (maybe filling in for Lauren Taylor who's pregnant).

Since daylight saving time has started in Europe I've been watching significantly less of AJE than before. During my usual TV hours they show documentaries now. I wish they had at least adapted the Newshour from London to summer time. It is probably meant to be a European evening newscast but it now airs at 2300 CET, which is quite late.

Is London to be closed next?

The one thing that might go in London's favour now is that it can serve as backup for Doha. There was an occasion a few months ago when Doha was off air for a number of hours and London fillled in at very short notice

Oh, man! I'm going to miss "I'm (insert name) from Washington with the top stories from the Americas".

The email says what's going to happen to Empire and Inside Story, but what about The Stream?

Which anchors are going to be let go? Someone has to take care of the Inside Story Washington versions (which, according to the memo, air 5 days a week now? I didn't know that!). Shihab has been the face of the show in the promos.

During my usual TV hours they show documentaries now. I wish they had at least adapted the Newshour from London to summer time. It is probably meant to be a European evening newscast but it now airs at 2300 CET, which is quite late.

The documentary hour that precedes the London Newshour also messes up my viewing schedule. I wish it moved, too.

"This new management is not one that tolerates any questions. The changes are alienating the public who has been loyal to the network for so many years. They're looking for a new audience. But if you read the comments on the social network sites, the viewers are not pleased with what they see on the air."

I'm surprised to see the DC breakouts go - in terms of AJE's prestige and closeness to policymakers, it was surely quite important, and AJE has made quite a point of cultivating the US market in terms of distribution. Seemed to be more central to the overall strategy than Kuala Lumpur was.

Would be interesting to know if the news studio will be physically dismantled (as in Kuala Lumpur) or whether it will be kept for occasional use (e.g. on US election nights?). The Stream is filmed in the Newseum IIRC - perhaps they will do Inside Story there as well?

If we are not the only ones unhappy with that part of the schedule, maybe they consider making a change. I remember some years back they shifted those London newscasts around when Europe switched to summertime, but last year they stopped doing that for some reason. I know it's somewhat selfish to complain about that, knowing that AJE has newsbulletins all the time, but still: it always sucks if you have to change your daily routine just because of TV.

no they mentioned that Empire will be moving to NY. but after taking all this in, i wuld much rather have frequent live updates than news from a studio. essentially Doha can still serve that purpose.

I am currently working with Al Jazeera on an ongoing brand project for their English, Balkan and Turkish news channels. I'll be able to share some of this work soon.

So a graphics refresh coming soon. I skimmed over some of this guy's previous work. He does amazing branding. Al Jazeera already has great graphics it'll be interesting to think how they will evolve. What does everyone think?
