I have a friend who's a journalist for an entity you might recognize & who covers the ME. During the beginning of the Arab Spring, he watched AJA almost exclusively.

When do Shiulie Ghosh/Shakuntala Santhiran/the Washington presenters appear?

Since April, Washington no longer do any news inserts. IIRC they only programme from there now is Inside Story Americas a couple of times a week. Only news broadcast centres now are Doha and London's 4 hours a night (1900-2300 GMT, plus inserts on a couple of Doha newshours)

I've recently been "getting into" AJE - the news rundown of stories seems to be excellent, with informative presentation and a good variety in presenters, guests and analysis however the fact that there is only ever a maximum of 90 mins of continuous news throughout the day and only 2 formats (one of which is not as significant as it was) leaves me bored after the first 20 mins or so! Even euronews' standardised format is more lively and appropriately paced!

Any AJE fans out there? Who presents at what time?

Thanks.

Big fan here, though I haven't figured out the schedule of any of the presenters (and don't think I ever will). But I'm with you, on EuroNews. And as much as I like AJ, I'd watch EuronNews first anyday. They do headline news right.

Huge fan here. I do agree the format needs a little refresher but I do believe that may be coming in the next few months what with rumors of a graphics refresh and new programming.

They rotate often. Until yesterday Shakun had been presenting the 1300GMT NEWSHOUR. But the rotations are quite tricky to figure out, yes. The 1900 GMT NEWSHOUR is done in tandem with London while the 2100 GMT NEWSHOUR is done just from London.

I do agree that I find I learn something new or get a different perspective on world affairs purely because of the great analysts and discussions (Inside Story & The Stream) they put out daily. I don't see that on the other two networks.

Improvements: I don't kno how I feel about appointment-to-view shows. I feel AJE is so professional because it doesn't have shows like these. But its's schedule has become a little stale.

I need some anchors need to go. Tony Harris, Stephen Cole, Shakuntala (sorry CMS). I find them extremely dull and are generally the weaker interviewers. I think some of the good anchors need some more space to shine. I liked Nick Clark's moderating of Libya on the Line.

Al Jazeera eyes new London home

Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera is in advanced talks to move into London's Shard skyscraper, the tallest tower in western Europe, a source close to the deal told Reuters.
The 95-storey Renzo Piano-designed glass tower, with views across London's financial district and the landmark St Paul's Cathedral, has so far failed to sign an office tenant as companies shelve moves due to the turmoil in the euro zone.
The Shard is being developed by London-based entrepreneur Irvine Sellar and funded by the state of Qatar.
"This is obviously related to the Qatar link. The views across London would be an amazing backdrop to its TV shows," the source said on condition of anonymity.

Washington presenter Imran Garda has left the network. Shame, because I always thought he was a good young talent whenever I saw him

Alright Stream community, we're taking a brief hiatus from TV to prepare the new version of the show--- but we'll still be online. What stories would you like us to cover on our website?

Sue Turton, formerly of Channel 4 in the UK. Didn't realise she was now at Al Jazerra.

Al Jazeera, Seeking U.S. Viewers, Bets on Soccer

Posted Image

By KEN BELSON

The Qatar-based network’s beIN Sport subsidiary bought the rights to broadcast some of the United States national soccer team’s World Cup qualifying games. From the NY Times.

Oh god, I hope that it doesn't mean I'll be stuck with even more soccer games!

^^Nah, they have a network of channels including those dedicated to sports so I doubt their news channel will broadcast any live soccer. But this might help them in attempts to make al Jazeera English more widely available on US cable systems.

I had Al Jazeera on the other day when a friend came over. A few days later that same friend changed his cable so he could get Al Jazeera. He was thinking as many in the U.S. think - that it's some extremist channel, but found out what you get is news with facts from around the world including U.S. news without all the politics.

It certainly was demonized in the US after 911, but I think (and I could be wrong) that the complaints were aimed at the Arabic version which has an entirely different editorial policy.

Yeah, most of the criticism was and still is aimed at Arabic channel. However, the English service has not been entirely immune to criticism in recent times, as the Arab revolutions started and Qatari authorities got involved one way or the other. But the issues critics often see with Arabic service are so big that AJE still seems like a solid and relatively unbiased news operation. There are probably numerous analyses and comments all around the web and elsewhere, but a month or so ago I read this piece on foreignpolicy.com, which seemed to have compiled examples of some of the most common issues critics complain about on al Jazeera Arabic and its Saudi competitor al Arabiya in the context of reporting the conflict in Syria. One has to wonder how long AJE can remain in a way isolated from the criticism of its Arabic sister channel. It's true they are two different channels, but they do share much of their newsgathering and as these conflicts are getting more complicated and al Jazeera Arabic's credibility plummets it will be interesting to see whether AJE will be able to keep distance from all the controversies.
